America Copia by Javier O Huerta describes itself as “An Immigrant Epic” and though this subtitle may seem self aggrandizing I must agree with it The simple sentence “Today I will go to the grocery store” inspires the entire work Huerta shows how a simple phrase from a United States citizenship test can hold bilingual meaning despite its English veneer The multilayered multiperspectivity experience reading America Copia is indeed consistent with an epic The scope is multinational the method encompasses several forms of written media the setting spans cities states and even countries and the epic hero performs the heroic feat of going to the grocery storeHuerta uses both Spanish and English to tell his story which develops a division among his readers mimicking the division among his narrators For simplicity’s sake Huerta’s readers will fall into one of three categories those who understand English and Spanish those who only understand English and those who only understand Spanish The experience will differ vastly from group to group I do not speak Spanish fluently and I am terrible at reading it; the best I can do is pick up pieces when the language is spoken because I am half Puerto Rican I first read the book without any aid in understanding the Spanish The experience was frustrating but seems intentional When Huerta writes about watching a music video with his cousins they all begin to chant They laugh and joke in Spanish which left me confused; he then addresses the reader saying “It was a joke not meant for you” While the declaration may seem callous it is reality There are parts of this epic that I will not understand as a monolingual English speaker and I am not meant to understand The shifting perspectives made me realize that the book is meant to be a different experience based on individual linguistic capabilitiesTo better understand the bilingual experience I asked a native Spanish speaker also fluent in English to translate areas I was not content with only knowing the English speaker’s perspective Specifically in the chapter “Amapola A Play” Magdalena’s speech at the end is critical to understanding the dénouement so my translator relayed the meaning in English He stumbled in certain areas not for his lack of English knowledge but a lack of words capable of communicating the same feeling as well as meaning of certain Spanish words I understood the superficial meaning but recognized the loss of nuance translation creates I realize that the fullest experience of American Copia comes from someone versed in both English and Spanish but even my lack of knowledge creates a uniue experience for me Perhaps these feelings of helplessness are meant to show monolingual English and Spanish speakers how a new immigrant feels before they are able to adopt another unknown language alongside their native languageHuerta’s form also speaks to the diversity of his work He utilizes plays poetry prose dialogue documents and children’s games and songs His poetry shifts form and layout constantly never resting on one method The poetry is almost completely in Spanish so I cannot properly appreciate it but I can value his use of form if not language The peculiar hanging indent found in each prose chapter paragraph is a mystery I cannot uite understand the logic behind this stylistic choice but I believe it has something to do with Huerta’s feeling as if he is left hanging never coming to a central truth or conclusion regarding what it means to be American

I enjoyed this short book very much The overall theme of the grocery at times grew a little tiresome By the end I was tired of the grocery store anecdotes and deeper meaning but I could still appreciate the labor and craft put into the form of the narrative
