Sigh I don't want to write a review for this book I want to be encouraging to new Druid authors I want material and resources for Druidry out there I cannot be encouraging about this Druid book First the grammar and spelling errors were freuent and distracting The author spoke mostly in run on sentences with terrible punctuation Perhaps the ebook version is worse than the hard copy but I can't imagine the level of errors not bothering a reader Second the writing has a causal friendly tone This can be a huge asset when approaching topics for new comers I think I'd enjoy talking to this author over a cup of tea in person The author's tone was too relaxed for me to take some of the statements seriously I also felt like I was missing part of the conversation At times the topic would just start and stop as if you'd walked in on two friends conversing not started a new paragraph Third the most infuriating part of this book was there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that distinguished it as being about urban practices This was just a short introduction on Druidry There was nothing about how living or working in an urban space could change the way you approach a nature and experience based practice There were no suggestions on how to connect to the environment when living in an urban place I understand that the author lives in an urban space He enjoys watching clouds to connect to nature I just wanted from a book called The Handbook of URBAN Druidry on the matter of urban practices I hope the author continues writing This book could have been a great series on a blog It's just a terrible book and needs meat mystery depth and certainly urban ideas

Many readers will acknowledge that being out in nature makes us feel better about life Some will recognize ¨feeling better¨ as having a spiritual dimension For me I have long known that being in the mountains was integral to good spiritual and emotional health However for many years it was a fact of my life due to the constraints imposed by both my chosen career and my spouse that I must live in a very large urban center far from my desired landscape Those years were a perplexing balancing act that became increasingly difficult as I tried to maintain my spiritual and emotional euilibrium in what I saw as a hostile environmentFor those of you who recognize yourselves in my predicament take heart for help is at hand The Handbook of Urban Druidry by Brendan Howlin is a useful resource that tackles the uestion of how to be healthy and happy in an urban environment when you feel called to be in nature While the title might be off putting due to the reference to Druidry this book actually offers practical suggestions for living a aware and intentional life in urban settings no matter your religious or spiritual orientation And respecting that people who live in urban settings are usually highly stressed and time challenged the book homes in on small changes that don’t take a lot of time but that can shift the framework of one’s being in ways that are intrinsically satisfyingThe book is organized in short chapters which are easy to dip into without the reader having to commit a large block of time Each chapter discusses one theme Learn to See Learn to Relax etc in clear prose and concludes with a few bullet points which suggest ways to incorporate the theme into one’s personal life I have transcribed the bullet points on a series of notecards for my reference and find that to be uite usefulThe light tone ensures that the information is approachable The format works well as the chapters are effective if there is breathing space between them allowing further reflection prior to continuing on My only complaint about the book is that there are far too many gratuitous references to bird watching of the unfeathered kind This attempt at humor and a light tone to counter the habit of spiritual seekers to take everything as deeply serious is understandable Nevertheless it comes across as inelegant and like the musings of a 12 year old boy; or perhaps it irks me because there are no similar light remarks as a foil with which a woman could identifyThe specifically Druidic portion of the book is actually uite minimal but helpful if you are considering Druidry as a spiritual path When I began to consider it for myself I found it uite overwhelming to need to learn a new spiritual vocabulary of word and symbol as well as to get my arms around what it actually meant to be someone on the Druid path Learning new holidays what they were about why they were important and how to celebrate was particularly difficult I would get suggestions for a ritual for example welcoming the winter solstice but would be completely lost as to why it mattered to my life Howlin has a chapter on ¨Living the Wheel of the Year¨ that I find to be excellent It explains each of the 8 seasons of the calendar and gives practical suggestions on how to personally incorporate themHowlin has divided the book into two parts What we have been discussing is the first part titled ¨First Things First¨ which makes up the bulk of the book The second part titled ¨The Advanced Stuff¨ only takes seven pages and introduces the three levels of formal Druidry Bards Ovates and Druids He also provides an excellent reference list for those interested in reading further The Handbook of Urban Druidry is a worthwhile companion on the spiritual path

I noticed the fairly high rating and I was uite surprised to be honest My spirituality group has strongly negative opinions about most of this book and I have yet to find anyone that I personally know who has read this and enjoyed itNot all the chapter titles made sense too many chapter were less than two full pages and often it was insulting Many concepts presented were hardly even skimmed and discussion tended to veer off into something unrelated So many good opportunities to discuss chapter topics were missed A hot button subject for myself and a number of the other members in the group was the disparaging comments made towards individuals with chronic illness A couple of the group members refused to read beyond that point they were so angryThis book did harm than good to our group I am the only one who is a practicing Druid but most of them were interested in learning Note I said WERE This book changed that If I was a person wanting to dip my toes into Druidry and see if it was the path for me this book would have me running the opposite way as uickly as possible That is what almost happened in our group I have luckily managed damage control by recommending some great Druidic books but this nearly ruined what progress I had made Even so I'm not sure if any who were interested in possibly studying it in depth actually will nowI try to find value in everything no matter how bad it may be I usually mean that as experiences but I will apply it to this book At first reading I thought perhaps I simply have a critical eye as a person looking for books through the eyes of my spirituality students After we discussed it I realized that was not the case As disappointing as it was I can say I got a couple ideas to add to my seasonal meditations For that reason alone I can appreciate the chance to review it On behalf of the entire spirituality class about 15 17 people we give this book 1 to 2 stars with a final average of 2

The term ‘Druid’ brings to mind groups of people in long white robes chanting in circles in the middle of the forest How on earth is it possible to be a Druid in the middle of a concrete and steel city? Mr Howlin explains exactly how it is not only possible but valuable and even pleasurable There is life everywhere even in the most built up of manmade places and learning to truly see that life and connect with it is the start of a special kind of spiritualityRather than outlining the tenets and practices of Druidry in encyclopedic form Mr Howlin takes the reader through a series of exercises which bring recognition of the living world and connection with it as well as the ability to relax and focus on life as it happens in each moment He also stresses personal responsibility throughout the book a focus that I find both refreshing and helpful Overall the book is a practical introduction to the path of Druidry that reuires no specialist paraphernalia just your own eyes ears hands and heart Definitely worth a read

This book is an excellent companion for a city dweller taking the Bardic Grade through OBOD I was feeling lost unable to combine my druidic path and city living but this book gave me excellent guidelines for my new pathEDITHaving restarted the OBOD Bardic Course I decided to re read this book Interestingly what I took away from it was different after all this time but I still found it useful and this time I intend to take some of the advice given in the book

In The Handbook of Urban Druidry Modern Druidry for All author Brendan Howlin has written a concise yet comprehensive guide for beginners wishing to exploring the tools of druidry Druidry is presented as a set of ancient techniues adapted here for modern application It doesn't matter what your own religion or set of beliefs might be the system as Howlin presents it is useful for any reader wishing to deepen his or her experience of lifeThe author’s fun and conversational writing style lends itself well to the subject matter; he poses the problems with modern urban living with a sympathetic tone In proposing solutions Howlin doesn't pretend that the techniues he shares will be uick or easy Instead he reveals how this system when used thoughtfully will ultimately help the reader live a healthier and happier lifeThe book begins with the deceptively simple techniue of really seeing what goes on around you something that you can lose sight of in daily life Howlin then leads you through exercises that will enhance your awareness of the present moment as well as helping you see the big picture of your life The practices are clearly described with summaries at the end of each chapter At the end of the book he shares resources for those interested in further studyThis is a delightful handbook that will enhance your life and teach you to be true to who you are I highly recommend it to all who seek a better and joyful way to live in our modern world

If you’re struggling with the modern urban hectic lifestyle craving something else and really not sure where to start this could well be the perfect book for you It’s accessible very straightforward and opens a door to a totally different way of thinking about life Philosophically speaking there’s some great stuff going on here in a way that is easy to absorb and apply to your own experiencesUrban Druidry represents an OBOD Order of Bards Ovates and Druids perspective of what Druidry is and how it works Conseuently there are some statements – like the idea that you need ‘2 Druid grade Druids to start a Grove’ that don’t hold true outside of OBOD I say this with some confidence being both heavily involved with OBOD myself and having plenty of experience of other kinds of Druidry too There is far diversity in Druidry than this book suggests but so long as you know that it’s a really helpful place to start and has a great deal to offer someone in the early stages of exploring modern Druidry

  8. Claudia Loureiro Claudia Loureiro says:

This book has been written with the non druid in mind The author takes the reader through what it means to be a druid and how to be close to nature when you live in a city So if you’re struggling with the modern urban hectic lifestyle craving something else and really not sure where to start this could well be the perfect book for you It’s accessible very straightforward and opens a door to a totally different way of thinking about life The book begins with the deceptively simple techniue of really seeing what goes on around you something that you can lose sight of in daily life Howlin then leads you through exercises that will enhance your awareness of the present moment as well as helping you see the big picture of your life

  9. Logan Albright Logan Albright says:

Sloppy shoddy slapdash and completely lacking in research It seems like the kind of thing someone could write in an afternoon The author too freuently resorts to I think I overheard somewhere kinds of anecdotes and fails to explain anything in detail He recommends meditation after claiming that it's too complicated for him to explain and proceeds to describe it as basically sitting around not thinking If you're unable to explain something don't recommend it and certainly don't mischaracterize it in a single sentenceThe book is not wholly without value but I'm amazed at the generally high ratings it receives I felt extremely disappointed by the lack of meat here There are much better and thorough treatments of this highly subtle and interesting topic out there
