    I found this book in a used bookstore and realized it is from 1929 The fact that I payed 5 for it and it even has a literary guild insert attached to the back of it as a book club selection from wings, with board member Mrs f.d.r governor of ny as someone who recommended the book made it an evenamazing find for me I am a littlethen halfway through this and have some interesting thoughts 1st people were still very racist in 29.It is hard to write anything about the reconstructi I found this book in a used bookstore and realized it is from 1929 The fact that I payed 5 for it and it even has a literary guild insert attached to the back of it as a book club selection from wings, with board member Mrs f.d.r governor of ny as someone who recommended the book made it an evenamazing find for me I am a littlethen halfway through this and have some interesting thoughts 1st people were still very racist in 29.It is hard to write anything about the reconstruction era, especially from a democratic view in 1929 without racist tendencies it then tends to be a bit disturbing reading some of the rational and arguments in the book 2nd crony capitalism is shown in full swing here the corruption of the grant presidency I think is not exposed as much as it should be and this book shows it here If anything that alone is a big reason for the book to be read I see there are many reprinted editions available I think if you can get past some of the racial stuff this is a very interesting read and a powerful expose on political life after lincoln
