Like a cat sighting prey I pounced on this fourth installment of The Gaslight Mysteries , anxious to join its scrumptious detective pairing, Michael McCree and Simon Hart, in another daring adventure Foolish be this Puss in Boots, for within three paragraphs I was a giddy kitty, drunk on the finest of catnip and reeling with the magical charm of both the story and its storyteller, Erin O Quinn This is an author who clearly loves men, her characters and language, and I daresay the originality Like a cat sighting prey I pounced on this fourth installment of The Gaslight Mysteries , anxious to join its scrumptious detective pairing, Michael McCree and Simon Hart, in another daring adventure Foolish be this Puss in Boots, for within three paragraphs I was a giddy kitty, drunk on the finest of catnip and reeling with the magical charm of both the story and its storyteller, Erin O Quinn This is an author who clearly loves men, her characters and language, and I daresay the originality of her phrases could charm the feathers off a bird Exciting, adventurous, and smart, Thin As Smoke is a delightful addition to this tantalizing series I adored it The opening chapter of this tale finds the capable detectives somewhat tense With no new cases forthcoming, funds are growing short and the air between the pair thickens as the anniversary of their first meet approaches A cause for celebration to Michael, but as the date nears Simon grows increasingly morose, and so both men are bereft the relief an amorous fuck would provide Just when the two are finally to engage in a long anticipated sex romp, a rap on the door brings them a lucrative job six huge, hand built boat motors have gone missing overnight Before they can get a firm grip on the investigation Michael receives a summons from the Pinkertons Their contact, a slim, handsome man, is a stranger to Simon, but the scandalous cheek to cheek Michael and the mysterious Dashiell perform on Paddy s dance floor sends a spark of jealousy through the detective Pinkerton agent Sam Dashiell Hammett needs their help locating and stopping a Mafia run bootlegging operation before its product finds its way into the speakeasies of America The private detectives agree to help, but subsequent events find Michael paired with Sam, and Simon working alone. This is a smart, episodic adventure in the lives of two men very much in love While Michael McCree is comfortable with his love of men, Simon struggles to accept that his feelings toward Michael make him the type of man ostracized by a society he s always had difficulty finding his place in Hell, a type of man he s had occasion to loathe Simon uses his sleuthing genius to self examine his prejudice, even as he works to solve the case His well ordered mind becomes somewhat chaotic as he fights his personal demons, revealing a vulnerable facet of his strict persona that I very much enjoyed And to see Michael restrain himself from forcing Simon to acknowledge their relationship was just plain wickedly delightful, as was watching him fight to ignore the what could have been elephant between him and his former partner, Sam.A first rate mystery holds lots of intrigue and as the clues mounted I could not help but join the boys in solving the case The charming gang of urchins who serve as Michael McCree s eyes make a return appearance and I daresay they worked hard for their coppers in this double the mystery episode The humorous interruptions to Michael and Simon s sexual interludes serve as wonderful foreplay to the exquisite moment of Simon s surrender and put a yummy cherry on this witty and enticing tale.Thank you, Erin O Quinn, for this the way to HEA is paved with bumps of self reflection romantic mystery Smart, Sharp, Fun

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here Finally There s so much here a past friend maybeto Michael, a year from the day that Simon found Sargent dead, and so much time spent missing each other while searching I listened to the Gershwin song when it was first mentioned, and after that it was quietly echoing in my mind while reading So perfect for both Michael and Simon I m so glad that Simon has pulled his head out of his own ass at last I have great hopes for the next book

Simon PureThe much awaited fourth, and supposedly final, book in The Gaslight Series brings us to what is supposed to be the reckoning of the love story of Boston born Michael McCree and pan European Simon Hart, private investigators in 1920s Ireland Michael so head over heels in love with Simon at first blush and Simon denying that he is gay even while fighting his carnal and emotional tangle with Michael. And then she throws in the unlikely appearance of one Samuel Dashiell Hammett yes, THAT Simon PureThe much awaited fourth, and supposedly final, book in The Gaslight Series brings us to what is supposed to be the reckoning of the love story of Boston born Michael McCree and pan European Simon Hart, private investigators in 1920s Ireland Michael so head over heels in love with Simon at first blush and Simon denying that he is gay even while fighting his carnal and emotional tangle with Michael. And then she throws in the unlikely appearance of one Samuel Dashiell Hammett yes, THAT Dashiell Hammett and dares us to believe the character and story are both viable and worthy of trust And she delivers on all scores in another romantic, somewhat violent, adventure that like her other works is held together by the richness of her writing and the strength of her characters and storytelling How she manages to slip in the title of the book as a descriptive phrase in a conversation that is crucial to the romance is brilliant Took my breath away For those familiar with the series, please understand that for the most part this is Simon s story, and even at the end his persona and his way of living will bring a pause to your breathing, if not a tingle to your heart I must say that Erin O Quinn lifted my spirits here, but also threw me completely off in one respect If this is the last in the series, what are you planning next Hopefully she might spin a tale of a character in all these books who seems to be a logical segue to another series in which both Michael and Simon could appear hopefully hand in hand as well as Heart to Hart Superb, just superb

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here Grammar One year has passed since the last book, and our guys are back and have a new case They need to find 6 stolen engines and this time the bad guys are really dangerous.Michael is still patient like a saint, and Simon still doesnt have the courage to admit that he is gay at least not out loud or to his lover Michael doesnt push him and the poor guy may die soon of blue balls, since he cant even look at another man other than Simon and the younger man likes to hide behind his bedroom do Grammar One year has passed since the last book, and our guys are back and have a new case They need to find 6 stolen engines and this time the bad guys are really dangerous.Michael is still patient like a saint, and Simon still doesnt have the courage to admit that he is gay at least not out loud or to his lover Michael doesnt push him and the poor guy may die soon of blue balls, since he cant even look at another man other than Simon and the younger man likes to hide behind his bedroom door. When a man from Michael past arrives back in town and needs to work with them on a case that seems connected to theirs, Simon understands something that he already knew, other men find his lover very attractive His jealosy blinds him and also if he doesnt express it with words, still he cant stop staring at his lover and Sam, this is the other agent s name, while they are dancying trying to keep up their undercover identities Simon doesnt like this, and he is pissed at himself bcs the other man is doing what he is still too ashamed to do, also in a place like Paddy where around them there are only gay couples. We soon find out that Sam was Michael s trainer and they had worked together 7 years ago, but they had lost contact since then and all bcs one night Michael had let the other man know that he was attracted to him by putting one of his hands on the other man s leg Nothing had happened, and the gesture had surprised also Michael, since he was used on finding his pleasure outside the workplace, but the atmosphere and the long hours spent together waiting for the suspect to leave the place they were watching, had made him act like this Sam had told him to forget about what had happened, that they were friends and shouldnt ruin this, but the next day the man had left without a word and had taken another job Since then they had lost contact In this book we see Simon being kidnapped, hit on the head and left to die in a closet for a man that doesnt want to come out of the closet this scene was like Karma , but the young man isnt just pretty he is also smart and in the end he is able to escape and surivive a bad concussion, also with the help of his friend Jackie, Sargent s brother. While we see what is happening to Simon, we also see Sam and Michael searching for him, Michael thinks that his lover is dying somewhere without anyone helping him and if wasnt for his former partner,Sam, Michael would still be searching the house and maybe crying damn he really loves Simon The boy has his balls wrapped around his little fingerAnyway Simon s plan, takes him to the same men and the woman Mafia , who had left him to die, and with Michael s help that arrives few minutes later with Sam, they catch them and retrive the engines and the whiskey yeah Sam s case was about the liquor. In the final pages of the book, we see Simon and Michael talking and the younger man tells him about his impression of Sam, of how he thinks that the man feels something for him, that maybe is now friendship and he suggests to Michael that they need to talk He will wait for him to come back and then they will have another talk about them.Michael goes to Sam, that will leave the next day, and they have a chat They talk about the past and Michael asks him about his feelings The other man replies that 7 years before he stopped them from maybe becoming something else he doesnt use these same words, but this is clear , but that they are now friends and just this and he sees how Michael watches Simon and he can feel that Michael doesnt want or needs another lover other than him and maybe Simon is too stupid to understand this. They say goodbyes as friends and Michael goes back to his and Simon s apartment. There he talks with his lover and also if Simon cant says the words I love you out loud, he shows Michael how he feels with his little gestures and asks him to take him to bed. There Michael takes him, this time he is the one topping, and later they cuddle together, with Michael whispering sweet words in Simon s ear, words that mean love.I d really like to see Simon s jealousy and finally watch the man put a claim on Michael infront of someone else I can understand why Simon is this way, but Michael really is too patient Yes, at start he was pushy and he too understood that being that way at start was what ruined them in a way, but now he is changed and Simon needs to grow too.Next

Simon and Michael are spectacular once again I love the fact that this installment is centered around their one year anniversary We get to see how each of them see that fateful day and when you throw in their new case and the addition of Michael s old colleague, you have yourself a perfect addition to the Gaslight Mysteries Speaking of Michael s old colleague, Sam Hammett, it s a special treat for me Not only does Sam bring a new element to the story, an inkling of Michael s history and Si Simon and Michael are spectacular once again I love the fact that this installment is centered around their one year anniversary We get to see how each of them see that fateful day and when you throw in their new case and the addition of Michael s old colleague, you have yourself a perfect addition to the Gaslight Mysteries Speaking of Michael s old colleague, Sam Hammett, it s a special treat for me Not only does Sam bring a new element to the story, an inkling of Michael s history and Simon dealing with the jealousy that Sam s arrival has brought out, but for me it adds a bit of fangirl moments Sam Hammett, or as most people know him, Dashiell Hammett, is the creator of my most favorite mystery solving couple, Nick and Nora Charles and The Thin Man Neither The Thin Man nor Hammett s writing skills have any bearing on this story but just the addition of his character into the mix had me giddy going in and once I finished Thin as Smoke, I was just as giddy Miss O Quinn weaves Hammett into the world that Simon and Michael live in with creativity and nearly as much charm as Michael used to originally worm his way into Simon s life back in Heart to Hart. Now for the mystery itself Perfect for the duo, or should I say trio in this case I don t think that the case is as big a part of this story as the cases in the first three of the series However, I do think that how the characters deal with the case and each other isat the center of Thin as Smoke, which is still part of the mystery so perhaps it s just from a different angle However you look at the ins and outs of the case, this is a great addition the series and a must read, especially if you like historical settings

Thin is an apt title for this book I love this couple, the mysteries they solve, and the slow burn of love and honesty they struggle with I waited for another installment and am disappointed in the wait Most of the story was told in a flashback format, after the actual events and through recollection Most of the story happened while the partners were apart, which would be okay if it was integral to the story development but the recollection format took the suspense away This seemed a rush Thin is an apt title for this book I love this couple, the mysteries they solve, and the slow burn of love and honesty they struggle with I waited for another installment and am disappointed in the wait Most of the story was told in a flashback format, after the actual events and through recollection Most of the story happened while the partners were apart, which would be okay if it was integral to the story development but the recollection format took the suspense away This seemed a rushed, short story the author was obligated to write Ms O Quinn, please continue with this great, strong couple and their developing love story and mystery solving if your heart is in it If not, please don t Thanks
