What a beautiful book one of the best I ve read in a long time While the book is not difficult to read and there are some cool facts about science that may interest elementary aged kids, in the end I have to agree with another reviewer in saying it is probably best suited to middle school level due to some mature thematic elements The protagonist is a twelve year old girl,Suzy, an extremely bright, sensitive child, who is dealing with growing up and with grief over the loss of her childhood friend who has drowned Overwhelmed by life, she retreats into selective mutism The reader is inside her head as her thoughts alternate between the present and memories of happy times with her deceased friend when they were younger, leading up to a final quarrel never resolved before her friend s untimely death For anyone, experiencing the death of a friend is traumatic, but it is perhaps even intense when the person is so young The really lovely thing about this book is the way Suzy connects what she is learning about science and nature with her struggles to work through her grief She is fortunate enough to have an amazing science...

I loved this book So much so that I am compelled to write a review For full disclosure, I will state that I am a friend and running partner of the author and that my review and feelings about the book have nothing to do with the name of the science teacher, even though she is obviously very bright and astoundingly astute about her students I am enthralled by the sensitive and knowledgable depiction of children, their behavior, their humor, and their thought processes by authors such as John Irving in A Prayer for Owen Meaney and A Widow for One Year and Jonathan Safran Foer in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close three of my favorite novels In my mind, Ali Benjamin is grouped with these two authors for The Thing about Jellyfish Her depiction of Suzy s humor, sensitivity, relationship to her peers and the adults in her world, intellect, and need to use science to explain what is ultimately unexplainable shows a remarkable insight into the adolescent mind This is n...

I think that this book was very well written and intrigued me right off of the start The intro of the book, Ghost Heart, had a passage in it that really helped me to understand the main character s thoughts Here is what the passage reads, A jellyfish, if you watch it long enough begins to look like a heart beating I feel like this passage set the tone for the book which I think in most books the intro is supposed to do but in The Thing About Jellyfish the intro did for me than just set the tone of the book It made me feel like I was being transported into this world, Suzy s world Suzy is the main character in this book and for most of the book, she was very reserved and tried to avoid talking but in the end Suzy realizes that the past is in the past and she needs to move on Along the way she enc...

There is a lot going on in this novel grief, isolation, depression, denial, and other themes that influence Suzy s growth as a character Suzy holds a lot of anger in about how she treated her best friend last year, and after Franny s tragic and unexpected death by drowning, Suzy no longer knows how to deal with the pain that has been building up When entering middle school, Suzy and Franny had started drifting apart, and as Suzy recounts through flashbacks in the novel, their friendship became strained to the point that Suzy makes a big mistake trying to make Franny understand the pain that the distance is causing While Suzy recalls all the terrible things that happened the last year, she also stops talking to everyone her parents, teachers, and classmates Suzy begins trying to deal with Franny s death by making up a crazy cause for her death a deadly jellyfish sting Soon Suzy s research gets out of control, and the obsession with jellyfish brings Suzy to a final breaking point.I think the emotions in this book are something that students can either sympathize or empathize with the characters in this book Los...

While it started slow the story of growing up and dealing with loss was just so realistic and emotional The author makes her characters relateable and you understand them, what they are going through Section by section from jellyfish to the past to Suzy s present day ...

I really enjoyed reading, The Thing About Jellyfish I thought that is a really good representation of a coming of age story The author Ali Benjamin makes it really relatable and easy to read It was intriguing and tied science and nature, into a story about a young girl grieving a loss which is something that I ve never read before The character in the story is a young girl named Suzy Swanson, who goes through a traumatic event early on in her life She has to learn to cope with the death of her best friend, which is a very hard thing to do at such a young age Except Suzy s character grows throughout the story has she has to learn the hard things about life, and learn how to overcome them In the beginning of the story she doesn t want to talk about what she is going through by losing her friend, but as time goes on she realizes that she needs to talk about to be able to move on, which I think shows her character really growing and developing As for the plot, the book really tells the story of a very traumatic event, but how the character is able to overcome the situation The book is very easy to read, and to understand I think that it is a great book for children to read, and even if it starts out sad it definitely is engaging and interesting to read It is certainly geared towards an older audience, such as middle school and higher The storyline ...

Ali Benjamins novel The Thing About Jellyfish is a realistic fiction novel about a frizzy haired, science loving, slightly nerdy middleschool girl named Suzy She could never fit in at school, simply because she and her best friend Franny refused to pretend to be something they were not The two were inseparable, until they were seperated Benjamin showed us how Suzy grieved and healed in the most unusual way, involving an aquarium, a jellyfish, and a man in Australia Most importantly, Suzy s perspective reve...

It was definitely always keeping me entertained even though I would have expected a better ending that would have left me satisfied and happy I still enjoyed it and think that the story was very well described and meaningful I would rate it a 5 star if the ending was different.
