In 2015 I enjoyed reading Encounter, a poetry book by Linda Dobinson Now I have finally got round to reading her latest book of poems, Rainbows and Roses Firstly, I think Rainbows and Roses is a good title for a book of poems, for poets have been mentioning roses in their verses since the Middle Ages, and rainbows, too My love is like a red, red rose, wrote Robert Burns My heart leaps up, when I behold a rainbow in the sky, wrote William Wordsworth They are two examples of what I mean In 2015 I enjoyed reading Encounter, a poetry book by Linda Dobinson Now I have finally got round to reading her latest book of poems, Rainbows and Roses Firstly, I think Rainbows and Roses is a good title for a book of poems, for poets have been mentioning roses in their verses since the Middle Ages, and rainbows, too My love is like a red, red rose, wrote Robert Burns My heart leaps up, when I behold a rainbow in the sky, wrote William Wordsworth They are two examples of what I mean So I think her book has a good title Her poems are as bright and colourful as the title of her book promises One of the things I like about the poems in the book is that they are written in a variety of styles on a variety of themes The longest poem in the book is a light hearted ballad about a thief, called The Ballad of Mary Jo, which could be given a tune and played on the piano There are experiments with the haiku poetry form, whimsical verses about cats, celebratory lines about the seasons, the pleasures of being in your own garden, lines that note the changes in the weather, love poems, and always the poet reveals her delight in being alive, part of it all I particularly liked the short sequence of lines called Lightning 1A misshapen swordthrust from the black making nightday for a second.2A silver scar against the black, its raw beauty is all too brief.3Bright silver flashesdancing in the sky, chasing all sleep away. But too soon the cloudsmove on the flashes are gone.I return to my dreams.People like stories, so the novel will always be popular They are aware that there are many different kinds of fiction There are many different kinds of poetry, too That is something people ought to realise Sadly, for many people, poetry is something they left behind in school The idea of reading it for pleasure, like they would a novel, does not enter their minds Some say they do not understand poetry, it is too difficult, abstract It is true that some poets write poetry that is perhaps too clever for its own good The poetry of Linda Dobinson is clear, direct, fresh, immediately understandable It is one kind of poetry, her kind, and is one well worth reading Come with meand climb a rainbowone colour at a timeuntil we reach the clouds. We can drift awaywith the billowing greyon a quest to catcha wandering star. And on that starwe can make a wishthat our momentwill last forever A verse on the back cover of her book, an invitation worth accepting

I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review Thank you a lot for your trust, LindaPoetry and I have a weird relationship I appreciate poetry and I admire those who can write poetry, because I can t Then there is this feeling that I never quite know where to place it I also have been studying poetry for a while now, or rather I have been studying literature and poetry is a big part of it But reading and enjoying poetry and analyzing it are two different pairs of shoes. At this p I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review Thank you a lot for your trust, LindaPoetry and I have a weird relationship I appreciate poetry and I admire those who can write poetry, because I can t Then there is this feeling that I never quite know where to place it I also have been studying poetry for a while now, or rather I have been studying literature and poetry is a big part of it But reading and enjoying poetry and analyzing it are two different pairs of shoes. At this point, I m not sure if the line between just reading and immediately analyzing still exists for me any But then again, can you just read poetry Poetry is different from any other form of literature It is hard to define poetry as a whole or dare I say, even impossible. It is also hard to read a book of poetry and judge it If you read a novel you either like the writing, characters and plot or you don t, it is pretty simple if you think about it But poetry comes from a different place Apersonal place It is harder to make up your mind, because there is no real liking or disliking but rather timing , mood and emotions Well, we ll obviously don t talk about Teenage Facebook Poetry here That is a whole different thing Just to be clear on that one. While reading this, I decided to take my time I could have read this rather short book in an hour or even less, but poems are nothing to be just read, but something to be experienced.William Wordsworth once saidPoetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility I firmly believe this is the best way to describe the essence of poetry So, how am I gonna rate and let alone judge this book To be honest I don t exactly know how I can only go with my feelings on this one and listen to my gut.On a general view, I enjoyed most of the poems Most of them I would categorize strongly based on romanticism, very strong influence of nature, longing for something or someone and with a certain kind of aesthetic. Most of these poems had a very emotional core and I can only imagine that they come from a very genuine place and personal experiences In my book, it takes a lot of courage to put ones heart out like this and I admire Linda for stripping down like that and sharing her feelings openly like that. The collection also had an amount of haikus in it and I enjoyed all of them with great pleasure Haikus are difficult to write and I haven t come across many I enjoyed as much as those Again, the nature topic is mostly represented keeping the haikus nicely in tune with the rest of the poems. The biggest surprise were however thechildlike poems, telling stories of different cat characters in the midst of all the romanticism They were adorable to say the least Cute, funny and creative I could imagine it in front of my eyes like a picture book.If I had to point out a couple of weaknesses it would be the longer, ballad esque poems as well as some of the rhyme schemes. The ballads or rather stories told in poem form were certainly interesting to read, but not as well written as the shorter ones The form was sometimes a bit messy and bumpy along the way Some of them readlike a short story pressed into unnecessary rhymes to turn them into a poem and I do think that maybe real short stories would have worked better. When it comes to the rhyme schemes, I know that it can change within a poem and that a lot of writers don t use a certain formula and just do whatever they like and sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn t Here it was certainly a mixed bag But that little criticism is nitpicking really and doesn t spoil the fun or the experience while reading. Conclusion A lovely collection for poetry fans and definitely worth a read.Recommendation For all fans of poetry and newcomers who want to try to get into it
