An amazing heartfelt biography of a couple and their cabaretThis is a beautifully written book about the heyday of perhaps the most famous cabaret in history Having just returned from an excursion to Cuba myself which included a show at the Tropicana I was left dumbfounded by the experience The French cabarets of Paris have nothing on the exceptional dancers musicians and producers of this legendary place I immediately wanted to know about its history and this book delivered beyond my expectations The Tropicana wouldn’t be what it was and is without the fabulous couple Martin and Ofelia Fox who owned and ran it up until shortly after that fateful New Years Day in 1959 This book also tells their poignant story I loved this book

Cuban History One can learn about history the tried and true way via dates events and notable protagonists and you'll walk away with all the knowledge you needUnfortunately one cannot read Cuban history this way because it simply falls flat The history of Cuba needs to be read from the people and places that lived it The relationship between the United States and Cuba is easily understood and placed in the proper context when read like it is in this book and other wonderful books such as Havana Nocturne and the story of Bacardi

I enjoyed how this biography tells the story of the Tropicana including two love stories but also includes the history of Cuba in the 20th century

Interesting account of the years leading up to Batista’s ouster and stories of Cubans in exile and who stayed

This book was interesting and had a lot of history about Cuba and the politics of the 50's and early 60's when Martin Fox was building up the famed Tropicana I thought the story would center on the nightlife and club than the nation's history but after taking a world regional geography class geopolitics affects lifestyle very much One thing I think this version was missing was pictures and that would have been interesting Sometimes the terms and names in Spanish could be confusing Overall an interesting and educational read

It's a love story Love for Cuba love for the Tropicana and a uniue love between Martin and Ofelia the owners of the famous Cuban night club The most profound part of the book came at the end when the author discussed the emotional and political split between the Cuban people who left Cuba and those who decided to stay I always wondered about some of the aunts and uncles in my family who decided to stay
