    I discovered this little gem while reading John Meacham's American Lion Meacham briefly references the author and his work and I found the latter on line in a free fifth edition PDF formatIf one can get past the often cumbersome early 19th century prose The work gives a fascinating insight into the moral debate surrounding human sexuality in the 1830's Owen though a progressive thought the method of withdrawal as the best means of contraception of the day That said he thought that excess sex could kill a man and that masturbation led to insanity By our standards today he'd be thought out if touch and a prude In his time he was considered to be just the opposite
