Darlene Franklin does a great job of historical novellas Set during the American Revolution in the small village of Maple Notch the town is divided between Patriots and Tories and people who once were friends are now separated because of whom they support Josiah Tuttle's father is a staunch Tory But Josiah is in love with Sally Reid whose family are committed Patriots When Josiah's brother is killed in the fighting and Sally loses her father can these 2 close families become close again or will they tear each other apart? With wonderfully complex characters and a well developed plot in the short number of pages in a novella Franklin pens an easy to read and very enjoyable story The second and third novellas cover the descendants of the family in two later time periods

I just finished this book in one sitting Not because the story lacked depth or even due to the fact that this is a short book I have read novellas that dragged No this was a uick read because the characters invited me into their world of Revolutionary War Vermont and drew me with their hardships ingenuity and pluck The writing disappeared and allowed a vivid story world to emerge I was investedSally Reid lives next door to Josiah Tuttle the handsome attentive son of a Tory Sally's brother and Father are Patriots and serve with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys Tragedy strikes both families and their worlds will never be the same How can new love survive grief violence and suspicion? This is a story about faith endurance and prevailing love Hero and heroine discover the depth of their grit and find that affection between friends neighbors and sweethearts can indeed overcome insurmountable obstacles in this beautiful portrait of our country's historical and spiritual roots

The Prodigal Patriot depicts a time of turmoil uncertainty and war Sometimes even family members held opposing views about whether the colonies should stay loyal to the king or fight for their independence Darlene Franklin tells a gripping tale of one family who showed the courage to work for what they believed in against all odds The Reids face danger and risk discovery as they strive to hold on to their land Hiding in a cave nearby they tend to their fields under cover of darknessJosiah Tuttle despite his brother’s death at the hands of the enemy offers his help to the Reid family Not only does he believe in the Patriot cause he also loves Sally Reid Yet to help the Reid family deems him disrespectful to his fatherSally meets Josiah’s offer of assistance with suspicion and fear Is he acting as a spy for the cause his father so staunchly believes in? Trust and love build as she is faced with situations that reuire Josiah’s assistance and supportThis story brings characters from the Revolutionary War period to life portrays their struggles and their courage and culminates in a conclusion that portrays the power of faith and forgivenessAgain Darlene Franklin takes her readers to another place and time with a story that entertains teaches and satisfies Historical research is excellent and I learned many facts about the Revolutionary War

The Prodigal Patriot #1 Maple Notch by Darlene FranklinI read this as part of A Soldier's Rest boxed set Maple Notch VermontMay 1777Sally Reid lives in the beautiful pine and evergreen scented mountains of Vermont Her brother and father are Patriots who serve alongside Allen's Green Mountain Boys and may soon be called upon if there is a war as are many of their neighbors Her childhood friend and neighbor Josiah Tuttle's father is a Tory but Josiah is torn as to where his loyalties are When tragedy strikes and his father forbids his involvement with the Reid family will Josiah honor his demands or will he follow his heart? Tragedy and grief would be enough for any family to deal with but with bitterness and hate in mens hearts and thus guiding those men to force out families from their very homes it could be disastrous Sally her younger siblings and a very pregnant mother find themselves in that very situation but they trust God to protect and provide for them while they live in a secret cave at the edge of their propertyI won't share as I don't want to spoil the storyFor a short story it is filled with so much and takes the reader on an emotional roller coaster ride with tears grief joy laughter sadness excitement and faith We see the effects of war hate and bitterness neighbors pulling together history in the making and I love the faith elements and spiritual roots woven throughout the storyline

Be thou my strong habitation whereunto I may continually resort; Thou hast given commandment to save me; For thou art my rock and my fortress Psalm 713This passage from the Bible not only appears on the back cover of the book but is an integral part of the story line The Prodigal Patriot is a gem of a book well written with characters who will capture your heart It is apparent that Darlene thoroughly researched not only the era but the setting of her story and the Green Mountain Boys The plot is set during 1777 in Maple Notch Vermont while the war between the Colonies and Britain is taking placeI found myself immersed in the pages of the book not wanting it to end The story centers around the families of Sally Reid a Patriot and Josiah Tuttle whose father is a Torie Both families suffer tragedies as the story progresses yet it is in these tragedies that they find their faith in God growing As Sally and Josiah's faith grows so does their ability to forgive and their love for each other I highly recommend The Prodigal Patriot to anyone you will be glad you read it Please visit Darlene's website

It took me a bit to get interested in this story Sally is a sweet enough heroine living with her parents two brothers and a young sister in 1777 Vermont Josiah and his brother and parents are neighbors and friends for as long as Sally can remember But the community is in unrest as loyalties are divided between the king and independence and Sally's and Josiah's families are on opposite sides Then tragedy strikes both families taking a son from one and a father from the other as tensions escalate Sally her pregnant mother and her two youngest siblings are forced to abandon their home after being threatened by the Tories But they are determined not to abandon their land and make a home in a nearby cave hiding out by day working their land in the evenings before the moon is too bright for them to be easily seen While the first two thirds of the story move along slowly the last third suddenly caught fire and became a page turner I won't say exactly why as I don't want to be spoilerybut in the end it was a pretty gripping read
