Nonfiction Grade 4 and up Great introduction to a master painter As a children's book the text rightfully concentrates on the early years leading up to her relationship with Steiglizt Insightfully chosen anecdotes based on past interviews with O'Keeffe and others give insights into her early talent and ambition The parallel between her career and the suffragist movement is highlighted without distracting from the story of O'Keeffe's artistic development Beautiful prints of her work including work from her childhood

I suppose this biography is intended for children but I appreciated as an adult that it was a uick read without feeling dumbed down I loved the photographs of O'Keeffe mostly by her husband and images of her artworks throughout this biography I loved learning details about her life as an artist and as a person and learning her progression of subjects and how they matched her travels and other things that were going on in her life I liked and related to the descriptions of Georgia as a teacher She wanted to get across the idea that 'art is important in everyday life that when you buy a pair of shoesor address a letter or comb your hair consider it carefully so that it looks well' 33 It was interesting reading about the progression of her respect inspiration and love affair with Alfred Stieglitz whom she would eventually marry and to read of her feistiness well into old age I respected her attitude about her work Georgia detested articles that called her an overnight success Reluctantly she agreed to a few interview and told one reporter 'Success doesn't come with painting one picture It is building step by step against great odds' 79 'I've never thought of myself as having a great gift It isn't just talent You have to have something else You have to have a kind of nerve It's mostly a lot of nerve and a lot of very very hard work' 104Some favorite new artistic discoveries Georgia O'Keeffe Museum Santa Fe New MexicoThe Shelton with Sunspots NY 1926Corn No 2 1924DH Lawrence Pine Tree 1929Jack in the Pulpit No 2 1930

I heartily recommend this uiet chronological bio to anyone who just needs to slow down and take a deep breath The austere tone of the prose which occasionally sounds young actually complements the soothing artwork displayed in full color throughout The design is outstanding each page that faces a piece of O'Keeffe's art is shaded in the most prominent color from the painting with complementary colored text This sounds like it might look busy but the effect is the opposite The soft washes are calming and meditative the pages rich and heavy A lovely work to hold touch and look at

This is another good overview of her life but this one doesn't have the nice color plates that the last book did It is fairly comprehensive in exploring who she was and has some nice pics just not uite as good as the last book on her that I read
